Yesterday, the House Education Administration Subcommittee met for the first time. The meeting was the first chaired by admitted sex offender David Byrd.

Readers will recall that while both former House Speaker Beth Harwell and current Lt. Governor Randy McNally called on Byrd to resign from the legislature last year, current House Speaker Glen Casada gave Byrd a key leadership role on education policy.

At yesterday’s meeting, Byrd asked each committee member to introduce himself (the committee is made up of seven men) and state an interesting fact.

Each member proceeded to attempt humor. Not a single member used the opportunity to call on Byrd to resign from his committee leadership post. Instead, they acted as if having an admitted sex offender at the helm of a legislative committee was just business as usual.

Here’s a link to the committee membership.

And here’s a picture of the six men who sat in silence while an admitted sex offender chaired a committee:

  2. I was told today via Rep. John Ragan’s office personnel that Ragan was the Chair of the Educational Administrative SubCommittee. How can David Boyd chair the committee?

  3. Thank you. I have sent messages to David Byrd and each member to the House Education Administration Subcommittee. David Byrd needs to apologize and resign and each Committee member must call on him to do so. This brings disgrace to the State of Tennessee.

  4. The Diane Ravitch blog (13,000,000 views) posted about David Byrd today.
If citizens outside of Tennessee held negative views about the state, they’ve been confirmed.

  5. It is embarrassing to think that any parent would vote for a sex abuser who did or could have molested their child or molested one child known to the family. That this man who has molested the children in his basketball team is in charge of policy in our Tennessee schools is at best, embarrassing, and most likely a tragic reality that puts all our children in danger. The psychological and physical harm that has befallen hundreds of our Tennessee children is real. By not stopping the continued power of this pedophile over the children in our state is unconscionable. It also leaves the state open to legal action.

  7. Tennessee state House of Representatives education level-
    (1) Twice as many (30%) of Republican members as compared to Dems, stopped educational advancement after high school.
    (2) 60% more Dems than Repubs have advanced degrees.
If the current Repubs who stopped at high school, were among a college ready cohort, they didn’t achieve the goal. And, if they weren’t, their lack of education hasn’t prevented them from passing laws that their fellow citizens have to adhere to. Tennessee’s promotion of the Bill Gates’ agenda reflects the hypocrisy that Republicans are known for.
The entitled in Tennessee find comfort in narrow, uninformed views.
